I have spent the last 20 years helping students understand Maths and Physics properly — not simply learn enough to get through the next exam.

I have a particular interest in students who are capable of considerably more than their current results suggest. Sometimes the problem is a gap in knowledge or that a concept has never really clicked. Other times confidence has deteriorated after a series of disappointing results. My first job is to work out which of these is actually happening. I then tailor the teaching accordingly.

I don’t believe that there is one way of explaining Physics or Maths that works for everyone. I use questioning, diagrams, worked problems, alternative explanations, exam questions and discussion to establish whether a student genuinely understands an idea rather than simply recognising the procedure.

This approach has produced good consistent results over the years.

Historical feedback includes students moving from C to A* in A-level Physics, B/C to A*, Grade 5 to Grade 8 in GCSE Maths and D/E to B/C in A-level Physics. One A-level Physics student who began at B/C became the highest-performing student in her class.

I also work with students who are already performing strongly but want to push further; whether that means A* preparation, tackling university entrance exams, preparing for the Olympiad, preparing for US admissions tests or developing the depth of understanding needed for university-level Physics.
